NEW ZEALAND SCHOOL OF DANCE SUMMER INTENSIVE

Registrations for the New Zealand School of Dance Summer Intensive 2025 are open.

This programme, developed by leading dance educators in New Zealand, gives dancers a taste of what is taught at the School calling all young dancers aged 12-17 to experience the highest levels of training from the School’s renowned teaching staff and guest tutors.

2025 Dates: Tuesday 21  to Friday 24 January

What to expect:

  • Classes specialised in preferred dance form, where dancers will choose to join either the contemporary dance or classical ballet classes.
  • Daily technique and repertoire classes.
  • Daily complementary classes designed to develop technical and creative aspects of dance for classical ballet and contemporary dance.
  • Taught by NZSD faculty and both classical and contemporary guest tutors.

COST: $345 course fee + $45 registration fee

About the New Zealand School of Dance

The New Zealand School of Dance has an impressive faculty teaching classical ballet and contemporary dance. The Board of Trustees, Professional Advisory Panel, staff, health practitioners, and supporters work together as a strong team with tutors and NZSD students towards this goal.

The School has been led since 1998 by director Garry Trinder – Born in England, Garry Trinder trained at The Royal Ballet School, Rambert School of Ballet and Maurice Béjart’s MUDRA. As a dancer, he worked with Scottish Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and London City Ballet. Garry, former Artistic Director of Hong Kong Ballet and Director of Dance at South Africa’s NAPAC Dance Company, holds a master’s degree from Trinity Laban Conservatoire and an Advanced Diploma in Education from Newcastle University. He is associated with international ballet competitions like Prix de Lausanne, Japan Grand Prix, and Youth America Grand Prix. Since 2011, he has been the President of the Jury for the Asian Grand Prix in Hong Kong. In 2013, Garry was honored as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contributions to dance.

The New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s leading dance training institutions, preparing students for careers in professional dance performance.  Established in 1967, the NZSD has an international reputation. It is known for producing versatile and employable dancers, skilled in classical ballet and contemporary dance. The School’s unique training develops qualities that meet the needs of the dance profession while extending the boundaries of the art form.

Around eighty gifted young dancers study full-time at the School. In recent years this has included students from around New Zealand, the Asia/Pacific region and further afield.

An impressive faculty of teaching staff, choreographers, and international guest tutors assist students to achieve two or three-year qualifications in dance performance. Most graduates enter careers in dance performance, around 75% of students gaining contracts within six months of graduating. Former students have gone on to make significant contributions to dance, leading outstanding careers and dancing with top companies around the world.
