Melbourne Institute of Dance – Kalman Warhaft

Nurturing your passion for dance one step at a time.

For Melbourne Institute of Dance Director, Kalman Warhaft, ballet was never just a past time, it is a lifelong love.

The dance school that drives Warhaft’s passion for education incorporates a Children’s Programme which ranges from tiny tots though to all levels of ballet, including boys ballet.

Adult ballet and contemporary dance are a main component of MIoD’s Adult’s Programme.

With expertise in injury recovery with Coaching is also available.

Warhaft spent his formative dance years under the tutelage of internationally acclaimed Russian teacher Madam Janina Ciunovas – one of “Ten 20th Century Master Teachers” (Gretchen Ward Warren’s “The Art of Teaching Ballet”).

He studied at the Australian Ballet School and a s a student performed with:

  • The Australian Ballet in Coppélia
  • The Dancers Company’s regional Australian tour of The Nutcracker
  • The English National Ballet on their arena production of Swan Lake, during their Australian tour.
  • Graduating with an advanced diploma of dance

Warhaft joined SDC led by Graeme Murphy AO and Janet Vernon performing works including:

  • Graeme Murphy’s Grand, Berlin, and The Director’s Cut
  • Stephen Petronio’s Underland
  • Meryl Tankard’s INUK2
  • Rafael Bonachela’s 360˚ and we unfold
  • Aszure Barton’s Sid’s Waltzing Masquerade
  • Kenneth Kvarnström’s Mercury

He has also danced with.

  • The Australian Ballet
  • Opera Australia
  • Opera Queensland
  • Victorian Opera

“My final performance, still dear to my heart, was as a principal dancer with Opera Australia in Graeme Murphy’s “sumptuous production” of Aida. Since retiring from the stage, I have enjoyed being creative assistant to Alice Topp, one of The Australian Ballet’s rising choreographers.”

Graduating with a Diploma in Elite Dance Instruction from The Australian Ballet School Warhaft combines his love for dance and dance education with MIoD.

We are delighted to have Kalman Warhaft co-presenting next week’s dance teacher workshop – What are our Potentials for 2022?

In collaboration with Dr Linda Sastradipradja, Kalman will discuss and deliver the potentials and pitfalls of hybrid dance teaching.

They will offer strategies for student engagement, adaptability, flexibility, and the nuances that come with in person and online instruction.
